Backcountry Alpine & Nordic Skiing

Welcome to the WMC's "ski the greatest snow on earth" page. There are many useful links on this page which will direct you to things you need to know such as weather forecasts, avalanche conditions, upcoming clinics and talks, trip ratings, bus schedules, road conditions, ski swaps, equipment reviews and most importantly, registration forms if you organize a ski trip.

If you are new to the backcountry consider signing up for a "Break Into The Backcountry" trip. These are for those with skiing experience and working knowledge of their backcountry gear. Volunteers organize a variety of trips throughout the ski season. We encourage you to check the calendar and register early for trips so you don't get shut out. Be safe, have fun and participate in all that this great club has to offer!

The club organizes both Alpine & Nordic backcountry tours. The difference between the two is that in general Alpine tours emphasize the "turn" while Nordic tours emphasize the "tour". Skis mounted with telemark or A.T. bindings as well as split snowboards work well for Alpine tours. Skins are required for Alpine tours. The equipment used for Nordic tours tends to be lighter weight then the equipment used for Alpine tours.
