kayak/canoe legacy refuge jordan river cleanup - September 19, 2009
The WMC offers COVID conscious opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Participants of all in-person events should bring and wear face coverings, expect social distancing, and changes to our usual practices. To support contact tracing and hands-free signing of the WMC Liability Waiver, online registration is required for all in person WMC events. This is our annual chance to paddle in the Legacy Bird Refuge, off limits to paddlers the rest of the year. If you have a boat and can help out, please join us as we support the other great organizations involved in this effort. We will be the ones in boats who can reach the trash that is floating in the water. We need as many boaters and we can get. Spread the word to your friends. Canoes and kayaks both welcome. Please read below for instructions and directions. Help clean up trash from Utah's waterways and beaches and increase the quality of life for all of Utah! In partnership with the Utah Department of Transportation, Utah Rivers Council, Wasatch Mountain Club, SWCA Inc., HDR Inc., Black and Veatch, Squire Inc., Salt Lake County, North Salt Lake, adjacent landowners and the Legacy Nature Preserve, we invite you to join us on a beautiful section of the Jordan River. This area is situated between Salt Lake and Davis Counties and was inundated during the historic flooding of Great Salt Lake. Extensive efforts upstream have finally removed the trash that had built up in the river over the last half-century. Many miles of river have already been cleaned! We are planning to clean the garbage and debris from the remaining 20,000 linear-feet of the Jordan's riverbanks and the Great Salt Lake Shoreline. We will also be removing noxious plants and restoring native ecosystems by spreading native seeds and transplanting wetland vegetation. Enthusiastic volunteers are needed! Be sure to wear weather appropriate clothing including long-sleeve shirt and pants. Sturdy shoes, rubber boots or waders may be the most appropriate footwear. Bring work gloves, hat, and binoculars (if you own them); also bring sun block, mosquito repellent, water and a snack. Please let me know if you have additional tools or light equipment for brush and fence removal. All ages are welcome, but please leave your dogs at home to reduce potential impacts to migratory birds. Please let any other interested parties know and contact me to SIGN UP. If you are already on the list, please REPLY TO THIS EMAIL to confirm that you are planning to join us!
