jordan river kayak/canoe - August 4, 2010
The WMC offers COVID conscious opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Participants of all in-person events should bring and wear face coverings, expect social distancing, and changes to our usual practices. To support contact tracing and hands-free signing of the WMC Liability Waiver, online registration is required for all in person WMC events.Sunday two people drowned on the Jordan at Winchester Street just above where we frequently put in. While this is mostly a flat lazy river, there are many diversion dams and hazards. It is important to know where they are and how to avoid them. Paddle with us and learn the safe sections. This evening we will paddle from 14400 South to 12400 South. To reach the put in, take I-15 south to Exit 288, Draper, Bluffdale 14600 South. Turn right and go west 1.3 miles. Watch for sharp turns and a narrow one-lane wide railroad underpass. Turn right onto Spring View Parkway, 1160 West. Follow this road until you reach a traffic circle with a fountain in the center. Park near the circle. You won't see the river, but the put in is just a short walk around the corner from there. The water level is low, so expect to get stuck on gravel bars and make quick turns on narrow channels. It is a beautiful section with hardly any riverside development. Canoes or kayaks are approriate, but you need to provide your own.
