road bike: huntington canyon and scofield - July 21, 2012

Update (July 14). Due to the Seeley fire in Huntington Canyon, we've moved our campsite to another one nearby but away from the part of the canyon where the fire damage occurred. We'll spend most of our time in the higher elevation areas unscathed by the fire and where it is cool. We can take a little drive down Huntington Canyon to check out the fire and flash-flood damage, though. Some of it is pretty impressive. We'll camp Friday and Saturday nights. Saturday, we can ride in the area around the upper end of Electric and the top of Huntington Canyon starting from our campground. That is where the best scenery is anyway. Other options are to ride in the lower and upper parts of Huntington Canyon, avoiding the middle area where the fire damage and flash-flood debris flows occurred. Sunday morning we'll pack up and head for home via the Energy Loop scenic byway, stopping to ride part of it between Highway 6 and Scofield, with an optional (but must do - it's too good to miss) leg up to the charming little mining town of Clear Creek. Clear Creek was under evacuation due to the fire until just a day or two ago. It didn't burn up and the road to it is open again. You can see how close the fire came when you do the ride. Contact Robert for more details and to register. HEADSUP NOTICE: My brother and his two children (ages 11 and 7) who joined us last year will join us again this year. They will just camp and eat meals with us and do their own thing during the day. We will have one friendly dog along, too, that will be kept on leash in the campground.
