nordic ski tour: middle fork of blacks fork (winter camping) - February 16, 2013
A 3-day/2-night exploratory winter ski camp towards Tokewanna Peak (13,000 ft.) via the Middle Fork Of Blacks Fork over President's Day Weekend. Winter access is from Meeks Cabin Reservoir (parking at 8,750 ft.) on the Wyoming border. This is a 3.5 hour drive from Salt Lake City via Evanston, WY. We will plan to set up a base camp a mile or two beyond the 3 forks (7- 8 miles in). The ski towards the peak (20- 24 miles RT) up the long drainage will require trail breaking with full day packs on Sunday. Total round-trip distance including the peak is 36 to 40 miles. Backcountry nordic (hybrid) skis/boots and 3-pin bindings work best. Proper winter clothing and gear is a must. Headlamp, beacon, shovel, and skins required. Pre-requisite: Previous winter camping experience and participation on a previous Uinta ski tour this season. Maximum of 6 (by February 9th).
