bike maintenance: flat tire repair
Repairing a flat tire is a worrisome matter for many cyclists, so let's get together for a flat tire tutorial to practice our techniques. We strongly believe hands-on practice is the best way to learn, so our tutorial will have two parts. First, Elliott Mott (who has graciously agreed to conduct our tutorial) will demonstrate the process and review the techniques step-by-step. After Elliott's demonstration, we'll transition to a hands-on application where everyone will practice the process of removing a tire and tube and installing them back on a wheel- the same process you'd go through repairing a flat tire on the road. Even if you've gotten over the intimidation factor of changing a flat on the road, you'll probably learn some tips or techniques from Elliott or one of the coaches we'll have on hand to help. How often, for example, do you struggle when putting the rear wheel back on your bike? Topics to be covered include tire removal and re-attachment to the bike, tube repair, floor pump selection and maintenance, proper valve maintenance, and air pressure. Everyone should bring their bike to practice with, along with tire repair tools, and should be prepared to get greasy. The tutorial will be held at Katie Slack's house, where we'll have plenty of room to spread out in the garage and driveway. Please RSVP to KatieSlack@xmission.com to get the gate code, then meet at my home, 3627 East Granite Bench Lane, Sandy at 6:30 pm. I'll have soft drinks and light snacks; feel free to bring a sandwich.
