day hike: split rock loop - February 17, 2014
This 10 mile trek on Antelope Island's western flank showcases a nifty not frequently seen part of the island; we'll stroll across grassland plains, contour around on an old Lake Bonneville shoreline, and then switch-back down to Split Rock Bay before looping back. Along the way we'll enjoy a rich array of vistas, mosey amongst some very interesting geology, amble past a pioneer rock corral, and view a variety of wildlife to include buffalo. This event has approximately 1400 feet of climbing split evenly in two sections: half on the way out, and half on the return. This early season adventure might include some icy-snow packed sections so micro spikes (or similar) recommended. Meet Elliott (801-969-2846) at the Council Hall parking lot located across from the State Capitol building on 300 North at 8:00am to carpool or caravan to the trailhead. Bring money as a fee is required to drive across the causeway to Antelope Island.
