day hike: bountiful bench - January 1, 2014

This out-and-back trek traverses the foothills sandwiched between Bountiful and Salt Lake City. Our route contours around approximately 3 miles each way (6 miles RT) over roller-coaster terrain on a combination of trails and fire roads; along the way we'll climb a total of about 1,000 feet as we ramble through a Foothills Protection Area and snake along on a section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. On a clear day this hike features wonderful vistas of the Farmington Bay Bird Refuge, Antelope Island, the Great Salt Lake, and of course, the Wasatch Front summits ringing the Salt Lake Valley. We'll drop down to Ensign Peak before returning. Micro-spikes (or similar) recommended. Meet Elliott (801-969-2846) in Council Hall parking lot located across from the State Capitol building on 300 North at 9:00am to carpool or caravan to the trailhead.
