nordic ski tour: red pine canyon to south fork weber river traverse (uintas) - January 12, 2014
After setting up a car shuttle, this tour will be a clockwise loop (begin at the Thousand Peaks Ranch gate) with the Smith and Morehouse road 'kick 'n glide' southbound and then turns southwest to climb along the narrow and steep Red Pine Canyon. The route loops into the South Fork of the Weber River trail with careful route finding to avoid an excessively steep descent. The distance is about 14 miles total with 2,200 foot elevation gain. Beacon and shovel required. Light backcountry gear (double-cambered, metal-edged) works best in this terrain. Pre-requisite is participation on a previous Uinta ski tour this season.
