evening hike city creek canyon-smuggler's gap little black mountain

A favorite riparian and steep hillside hike to the ridge separating City Creek canyon from Red Butte Canyon. Besides - the 6 mile drive from the entry gate ($3/car fee) up to Rotary Park trail head is often cooler than town by 10 F! The trail starts gently - crossing City Creek bridges twice - the Smuggler's Gap trail South fork leads steeply up to the Little Black Mountain Gap on the ridge. Some people may want to continue on to Black Mountain Peak (another 1/2 mile and 200 foot ascent) or Lookout Peak from here, by group decision we will go on from the Gap or head back down the steep trail (poles option for some is recommended). Big Black Mountain (8,958') sits on the ridge to the north, a sub-peak along the ridge to Grandview Peak (9,410'), the highest peak in the area. Note: BIKERS could join us if a co-leader contacts me (start earlier and ride to the hiking trail head at the end of the road)..see 2014 WMC trip write up and photos, Bike/Hike combined distance and elevation is 18 miles and 3500 feet!
