nordic ski tour: kings peak - March 28, 2015

That larger than life character - Harold Goodro - used to call high performing WMCers "goats". With that in mind this is the 42nd annual "running of the goats" in Henrys Fork. As usual we will meet (optional) on Friday night for possible car-pooling at the Walmart parking lot on Parleys Way about 5:00pm and leave shortly for Evanston and JB's restaurant (also optional), a couple of long blocks from the first Evanston exit (#3) and next to the Days Inn. The only required registration is by sign-out at the HF parking area where we camp. Headlamps are mandatory. We start before dawn and finish after dark. Bring lots of water (2 to 3 liters) and protection from the sun is important. Climbing skins can be handy but not essential. Standard touring gear is best. Turn-around is generally 2:00pm with 4:00pm mandatory no matter where you are. Elkhorn Crossing (NTD) or Gunsight Pass (MOD) are the usual turn-around points. The entire trip is scenic with great views. It is a classic! We carry out all waste paper, including TP, so plan for it. The first part of the trip is sheltered so we start out no matter the weather. Everyone goes up and down on the same route for safety. Contact Larry or Steve (801-272-5750, if you plan to leave extra early or go in the day before to a high camp.
