hike neff's canyon to pass above thaynes

I got more vertical in during March and first half of April than all of May. Everybody has been missing sun, dryness, and warmth. I think Mill Creek will be swamped with people and I want some vertical. The reasonably early start is to ensure that we can even park at the Neff's Trailhead. Hike will be moderately slow paced since my heart rate is drug limited presently. Rico and I were up to the upper trail junction (where choice is the pass to Mill B North or that to Thaynes) in April and it was free of snow. Hopefully we can eat lunch on the pass between Neff's and Thaynes. Another alternative is to go down the Thaynes trail a few hundred yards and ascend to the hole in the rock several hundred feet above in what I call Pot Peak. And have lunch there. It isn't a limestone cave but the overhang is about 30 feet horizontally and the ceiling is plenty high to stand. This ascent is steep snow and rock, but nothing very technical. The pass is all on trail and about 3100 feet of gain. Ascending to the rock hole adds several hundred more feet of gain. If you're frisky and prepared, you could continue onto the summit. The real beauty of Neff's Canyon is only visible when you get high enough to be out of the brush, above the meadow. I just want to celebrate the day. I expect to return about 4-5 PM. I will be bringing Rico.
