hike - box elder peak - September 17, 2022
We plan to climb Box Elder, one of the most scenic 11ers, as a loop hike starting from the Deer Creek trailhead at the Granite Flats campground. We climb steadily with switchbacks for about 3 miles to a high meadow junction with the Dry Creek trail, then turn south for the steep and rocky ascent to the peak. After descending the peak the way we came we plan to return along the White Canyon and Box Elder Peak trails which are less traveled and may offer more shade from the afternoon sun. The upper section of this hike to the peak is exploratory for the organizer. Expect a hiking pace of 1.5 - 2 mph. Bring plenty of water and 10E's; hiking poles are recommended. Access fee or National Park pass required for parking at Granite Flats
