car camp hike to wheeler peak - July 15, 2023
It is about a four hour drive to great basin national park. The upper campground where the trail head is sits at 10,000 feet and requires reservations through recreation.gov. the rest are first come first served. There is a group campsite near the caves but it is lower in elevation and can remain hot, even at night. We can leave in the morning and set up camp and have lunch. Then we can take a tour of Lehman caves in the afternoon. Reservations are required at recreation.gov. we will start the hike at 7:00 and I expect it to take about 6 hours. That way, we can be back at a decent hour dogs are not permitted on the trail or in the cave. No bags or packs permitted in the cave. Shoes may have to be sterilized to prevent white nose fungus on the bats in the cave. I may hold a meeting to discuss logistics and see who is going.
