winter mountaineering - toledo peak via west ridge - February 7, 2026

Join us for a classic Wasatch alpine objective. We will approach from Alta (Flagstaff lot) to Cardiff Pass, then transition to the West Ridge for a Class 3/4 mixed rock and snow scramble. Due to the current unseasonably warm/dry conditions, expect a mix of dry quartzite and firm, potentially icy snow in the chimneys. The ridge is airy and exposed; we will move as a cohesive team using specialized rope techniques (simul-climbing/short-pitching) where necessary. We aim for a "Mountaineer's Start" to summit and descend Toledo Bowl before the afternoon sun softens the snow into mashed potatoes.

Required Gear. Flotation: Snowshoes or Skis/Splitboard (essential for the approach and the slushy descent). Traction: Mountaineering-style Crampons (not just Micro-spikes) and a Mountaineering Ice Axe. Safety: Climbing Helmet, Harness, and a locking carabiner. Avalanche Gear: Beacon, Shovel, and Probe (and the knowledge to use them).
