Super Tour, Crested Butte, CO, March, 2009
The 3rd Annual 22.5 k 'Super Tour', sponsored by the Crested Butte, Co. Nordic Center, took place on March 7th, 2009. The backcountry race/tour starts at the Snodgrass trailhead, slides down to the historic Gothic mine site before passing along side the Maroon Bells- Snowmass Wilderness Boundary. The tour then climbs 2,000 ft. to the 'Top-of-the-World' checkpoint at 11. 341 ft., then descends past the Elkton site, and down the Washington Gulch Road to the finish, where hot chili and New Belgium beer await the racers. There were 63 participants, including 16 women. Mike Berry and Sharon Vinick from the Wasatch Mountain Club represented Utah in this event dominated by Coloradoans. A festive post-race party at Maxwell's in Crested Butte capped off the event. The Super Tour is often used as a 'must-do' training event for the annual 40 mile Elk Mountain Grand Traverse Race/Tour from Crested Butte to Aspen, held on the last Saturday of March.
