wind river range mountaineering - titcomb basin - September 3, 2026

This is an alpine climbing trip to the Titcomb Basin and surrounding area in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. While Labor Day is a few weeks past the height of summer rock climbing season, late August and early September offer reasonable daylight and temps and is usually prime-time for alpine ice in the area.

There is not a singular set objective on this trip - rather, it is envisioned as a chance for club mountaineers to base camp together in small teams, choosing the objective(s) that are most appealing. Thus, participation in this trip is open to all club members with a mountaineering background who are comfortable operating independently in committing terrain and remote settings with variable conditions.

The Titcomb Basin area offers access to several classic mountain objectives. This includes the Wyoming high-point Gannett Peak via. the Gooseneck or SE Col., Fremont Peak, and the organizer's objective - Mt. Helen via. Tower 1 Gully. While many technical climbs in this area are moderate in grade, participants should be prepared and plan for long days, a variety of travel modalities (rock, ice, glacier), technical descents, and sometimes uncooperative weather.

This activity is non-guided and exploratory. Limit 8 participants for wilderness area. If interested, please email the organizer to discuss experience and trip goals. Participants wishing to join for non-technical objectives or backpack in with the group are welcome to inquire and/or open up a separate outing, though priority will be given to alpine climbers. Trip timing and/or duration may be adjusted based on specific conditions and group goals.
