| Late June is a great time to hike to the Bell Canyon upper reservoir. Because there was so much interest in this hike, Barb Gardner offered to take an early group, and an hour later, I started up with my group. This is the canyon that started it all for me. It took many tries and lots of wrong ways. It was 30 years ago so there were no trailheads and no real trails. But when I finally found it the upper reservoir, it was the first time I experienced true wilderness and got my first glimpse of South Thunder. Fast forward oh so many years later, and those same feelings still stir when I get there. There is now a renewed Forest Service/CCC route, so it's not so tough to find it these days. And it's now a proper "Julie" hike with a small boulder field on the way up! |
