Zion Canyon's East Rim is one of the best ways to escape the crowds and find some solitude. About five years ago the trail connecting to the main canyon was destroyed in a landslide. Ever since, this large chunk of the park has been mostly ignored. Eight of us, including Frank, Kerry, Josie, Nick, Mike, Mark, Andrea, and Jake backpacked out to the Stave Spring area where, with a permit, you can camp in the at-large zone. We found a comfy meadow and set up camp for a couple nights. From there we hiked to Observation Point - most turned back at some point along the way but one intrepid hiker made it to the end. The next day we hiked to Cable Mountain and relaxed in the shade of David Flannigan's historic cable works which was once used to lower timber two thousand feet to the canyon bottom. Finally, Deertrap Mountain gave us stunning views of the main canyon.
