| This was a workshop to introduce climbers to the skills and concerns of lead climbing with fixed protection - bolts on the wall. Volunteers Neil and Tim showed up a half-hour early to haul a pile of ropes up to the wall to get top-ropes setup before the six participants showed up. Once the participants had arrived, we hiked up to Geezer Wall in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Once we got up there, we started the workshop with a discussion and demonstration of various important skills - what is lead climbing? How to clip the rope to the wall? How to build an anchor at the top? and so on. Then the participants broke into teams of 2 to practice the skills, while being kept safe by top-rope belays by the volunteers. Everyone got a chance to practice the skills, and ask lots of questions of the volunteers. Once we were done, a nice hike down to the cars, and a trip to the Porcupine for food and beer finished the day. |
