| A group of 12 (Aditi, Amy, Erin, Eve, Heidi, Jim, Kevin, Mark, Mike, Ray, Steve, Thomas) gathered at Ferguson Canyon Trailhead on Sunday morning to hike to Houndstooth Peak. This trip was posted in response to a special request by Aditi, who missed this objective on the previous week. Aditi had not done very much scrambling and was keen to try a more challenging hike that included a short scramble. The group had many experienced hikers who offered her their best tips for managing steep terrain and climbing over rocks along the way. The day was crisp and sunny, but it took us almost 2 hours of steep and shady hiking to reach the knobby outcrop where we could finally soak up the sunshine and see our objective ahead. At this point, Aditi was a bit skeptical that we would get to the top. Indeed, the route we would take was hidden from view and the visible parts of the peak looked quite forbidding. After a short food break, we proceeded to hike the last 600 feet to the summit. The trail got progressively steeper until we arrived at the hidden rocky gully that led to the summit. After a quick scramble up the gully, we popped out on the summit ridge and traversed to the small summit block. The twelve of us squeezed onto this limited piece of real estate to have lunch and take in the great views. The descent was slow in spots due to the steepness of the trail and everyone got lots of practice on placing their feet and using the vegetation at the sides of the trail for "aid hiking". This was a great hike with rewarding views and well worth the steep climb. |
