Snowbird High Peaks Traverse

This hike turned out to be very popular and we started with a large group of 12 from Snowbird base. We ascended the Gad Valley Rd to the top of the Gad 2 lift. From here, 10 of us continued off-trail up the steep slope to gain the ridge leading to the summit of Red Top, our first summit of the day. Everyone enjoyed the views and the food break, but with the weather looking threatening we did not dally too long. The next objective, East Twin was easily reached by following the ridge between the two peaks. From there, it was a short hop to West Twin. We could see our final objective, the Snowbird Tram, in the distance but we still had some hiking to do! We turned south to traverse to Geek Peak and then began our descent towards Mary Ellen Gulch. Our route involved finding Kurt Hilund's sneaky descent gully which turned out to grassy but steep and somewhat slippery. Everyone experienced at least one or two butt slides by the time we picked up the road to Sunday Saddle. Then it was a race around the Mineral Basin road to beat the weather back to the tram. The tram ride back down to Snowbird base provided a very welcome respite from walking downhill. Five summits (counting Hidden Peak) in one day, great company and great views made for a memorable day in the mountains.
