| Three of us rode a stunning stretch of gravel through Red Cliffs National Conservation Area just outside St. George. Craig and Greg, rolling in with their sleek gravel bikes, looked a little dubious when I pulled up on my $40 thrift-store hardtail mountain bike with various missing parts. I gave them a quick introduction to the philosophy of underbiking (riding terrain that's more demanding than what your bike is recommended for) and we set off. The 22-mile route climbed steadily up Leeds Canyon, crossed the broad expanse of Yant Flat, and finished with a long descent down Black Gulch. A tailwind pushed us along for much of the ride. There were a few climbs, but we were rewarded by miles of effortless coasting all the way to the end. |
