| We often take for granted the days in the mountains where everything goes smoothly. On this day, ten climbers took part in a first of it's kind training where things don't go smoothly. Working in small teams, these climbers collectively figured out and practiced over a dozen real-world problem scenarios. As the day went on, the complexity of the scenarios increased. For example, what started as isolating a simple core shot quickly became a knot pass mid-rappel, then a multi-pitch follower rescue. Other themes included stuck or short ropes, a dropped belay device, and needing to assist a follower thru a crux. This wasn't a training where folks were told what to do, or where there was one "correct" way to do things. Instead, it created a safe and open-ended space where critical thinking and teamwork flourished, with folks helping and mentoring one another in what they had learned. Fantastic work to all! |
