| I met my namesake Mike at 7 am at the trailhead. We also share a naval theme in our surnames (Nelson, Marine) but this time we were gathered for a land expedition, with the objective of saying goodbye to the Timp summit this season before winter sets in fully and the route becomes a serious challenge. The weather forecast was uncertain, with a storm passing to our south and generating some chances of precipitation on the mountain during the day. But we were lucky and only saw a few snowflakes on the upper side of the route and some light rain as we approached the trailhead on the way back. Clouds did cover the mountain most of the time but visibility was generally good and we even enjoyed some moments of sunshine. The trail was covered in snow once we hit ~9,000 feet but hiking traffic had compacted it and made it easy to follow all the way to the summit, although it did fade away slightly in some final sections. Close to the main ridge saddle we decided to put our spikes on, as the snow was getting harder and the terrain became steeper. We got to the summit in 4.5 hours and were greeted by a lull in the cloud cover that allowed us to see gorgeous views of the Utah Valley and the surrounding mountains. A day to remember with 9 hours total of hiking time and 14.7 miles. We'll be back soon, Timp. |
