training: wilderness injury and illness scenario practice - August 14, 2026

If you don't use the skills, you will lose the skills. And in wilderness injury and illness situations, we don't rise to the level of our expectations; we fall to the level of our training and practice.

I will have at least a dozen Mechanism of Injury (MOI) and Nature of Illness (NOI) scenarios printed from NOLS case study webpage. We will work in pairs to act out scenarios and practice responding to MOIs and NOIs.

Please bring your wilderness medical kit if you have one. Bring other items you typically carry in the wilderness that could aid in a MOI and/or NOI situation. Bring radios or communication devices that you typically carry so we can practice emergency call outs.

Please bring any books and/or printed materials from WFA/WFR courses that you have available for reference. I will have copies of SOAP notes and vitals sheets that participants can chose to complete.

In your RSVP email, please include your level of training (first aid, WFA, WFR, EMT, ...) and date of most recent training. Participants with no medical training are welcome to attend and can both observe and participate as acting patients.

This activity will be in my backyard at my home in Heber City. Participants are encouraged to bring some food and drink to share with the group.
