hike/snowshoe mt wolverine via catherine pass from alta - November 8, 2026

Full to mid day backcountry ascent to the beautiful Mt Wolverine (10,762') presiding over the Alta and Brighton ski areas.

Snow has blanketed all high peaks in the Wasatch and only a few remain accessible through low/moderate challenge routes. With sunny weather forecast for Sunday, the classic Mt Wolverine will be among the best choices to enjoy the magic of winter conditions in the Wasatch.

Snowshoes will definitely help in the upper sections but last Sunday I managed to posthole my way to the higher Sugarloaf under a snowstorm so they are not necessary if you are willing to put in the extra effort. Winter shoes, trekking poles, sunscreen, and warm clothes are necessary. Gaiters and spikes/cleats recommended.

Due to south facing aspect of this route, potential avalanche terrain will probably not exist and therefore avalanche rescue gear is not required. If we come upon conditions of concern, the group will discuss concerns and modify the route plan.

4-6 hours out and back estimated.
