day hike buffalo round up on antelope island - October 24, 2026

Nearly 800 wild bison. Hundreds of horseback riders. One of the last true Western spectacles left, and it happens right in our backyard. Every fall, riders sweep Antelope Island and drive one of the nation's oldest public bison herds north into the corrals. We'll stake out a spot at the White Rock Bay viewing area to catch the final thundering push into the corrals. The Riders start at 9 a.m. from Fielding Garr Ranch; the herd usually reaches the corrals between noon and 3 p.m. Where: White Rock Bay, Antelope Island State Park Cost: Free to watch, no registration (park entry fee applies) Bring: Camp chair or blanket, layers, sunscreen, binoculars, snacks, and patience. These are wild animals, so they keep their own schedule. Heads up: vehicle access on the east side road will be limited, so plan to carpool and arrive early. I am going to get their early, and see if I can spot the bison before the Riders find them. TIP: Bring Binoculars
