day hike - timpanogos mt from timpooneke trailhead msd - October 25, 2026
This is a strenuous, full-day hike with substantial sections of snow/ice for strong hikers.
Based on recent reports, what I've been able to see from the distance and a new storm forecast for Thursday/Friday, I expect to find good amounts of snow past ~9,000 feet and hard snow/icy conditions from the saddle to the summit.
Spikes, trekking poles and warm winter gear are a must. I'll also be carrying snow shoes, just in case the upcoming storm creates new sections of deep powder snow, but I don't expect them to be necessary this early in the season. A headlamp is also needed for a possible late return to the trailhead and if you have crampons or even an ice axe, they may help in the final section. Gaiters will keep your feet dry.
Otherwise, it should be a nice hike to get acclimated to the upcoming winter conditions in the Wasatch and perhaps the last chance to summit the Timpanogos before they close the Alpine Loop road and bigger storms turn this hike into a challenging, full-on winter ascent.
