| We were 4 in the group for this hike. As I promised I lead them to one of the cave's entrance that made news in the 1950 and 1960. Neff's Cave. You can read the article in the Desert News titled "Deep Cave Has A Rocky History. The cave was first the deepest cave in the US at 1,186 feet but then took second place as it is at 1,170 feet. Our own Alexis Kelner was among the the rescue team of the 1950 incident in which the team rescued Jim Cowling a student from California who got trapped for 8 hours dangling from his harness. The cave has been sealed by the NFS in 1965 as deemed too dangerous. The actual cave entrance is above higher on the west side of Mt Olympus. I lead the group then to the Meditation Rock a flat rock hidden away in the bushes and easily to pass by if you do not know it is there. We reached the turning point of the loop and we took a group picture by the creek. The good thing about this hike is that it has all in the shade a great walk to take in the evening away from the scorching sun. We got to the parking lot and we all drove away at sunset. |
