The motivation for this hike was to check out the ski terrain on the north side of Gobbler's Knob and in Porter Fork. I had no other takers for this trip (my fault for posting it too late) so decided to go it alone. The hike to White Fir Pass along the well-graded Bowman Fork trail is very pleasant, with lots of opportunities to see canine friends. After the pass, the trail narrows, but the views open up. The trail makes a rising traverse to Baker Pass and cuts across several of the main ski lines from Gobbler's Knob. There is no mystery as to why this can be serious avalanche terrain. From Baker Pass, Desolation trail skirts the steep south side of Mt. Raymond and offers excellent views across the valley to Kessler Peak and the peaks in Broad's Fork. The trail that descends into Porter Fork varies from pleasant switchbacks in the forest, to overgrown, sometimes rocky sections through several rolling meadows. The upper reaches of this fork definitely have some avalanche concerns, but overall, the area has good skiing prospects, provided the snow cover is adequate in the lower part of the drainage. Fortunately, the last section on the paved road, which I have done in winter, offers easy access for the first 1000' of this trail. This turned out to be a very pretty hike and well worth doing for the views along the way.
