Trip Report: Rock Climb - Vedauwoo

Rock Climb - Vedauwoo

Well folks, this was one for the books. It all started early in the week when it became apparent that the originally planned Moab trip would be a literal washout.Seeking to salvage the weekend, a plan was hatched with four climbers and two doggos setting off into cowboy country in search of dry rock.Little did we know that our old friend Murphy was along for the ride as well...

The first day started on a high note as Nathan and Matt took turns leading the famously fun Edward's Crack.Unfortunately the clouds and rain soon caught up to us, and we retreated to the town of Laramie for a round of burgers and barnchos (a local specialty).Despite Steph having some car troubles, we made our way back after lunch for round two.Matt and David traded leads on an "easy" offwidth, if such a thing exists, with each leaving some skin on the notoriously sharp rocks that Vedauwoo is known for.

If getting banged up at Vedauwoo was a contest though, Steph launched herself to victory when she fell on a sport route and had a draw come unclipped from its bolt, resulting in a 10-foot ledge fall.Battered, bruised, and shaken, we called it a day and retreated to tend to our (very real) wounds.Murphy wasn't quite finished with us however, as Nathan came down with a sudden stomach bug in the middle of the night.

Saturday we awoke to a cold drizzle, which prompted a snap decision to seek better conditions near Ft. Collins. We scoped out a few areas in Poudre Canyon, but ultimately set up on a lakeside cliff called Duncan's Ridge. With Nathan driving a top-belay shuttle, Matt and David got some quality climbs in on steep rock.A fun pit stop at New Belgium Brewery followed, and we ventured back to the Voo for one last round of crack climbing and a cozy campfire to cap off the day.

Sunday morning served only to remind us of where we were - the land of extremes.Single digit chills and 55+ mph wind gusts awaited us outside the tents. With the cracks finally showing in our collective stubbornness, Vedauwoo claimed its victory and the team hastily broke camp tohead home.In light of all these ordeals, however, the team agreed the journey to be a worthwhile pursuit as we hatched ideas for a rematch!
