| Participants: Kurt Hiland, Thomas Fu, John Jones, Eve Kovacs, Alessandro Zanazzi, Brennan Feely, Daniel Hadley, Lubka Skumtova Photos: Daniel Hadley, John Jones, Thomas Fu Our team of 8 met at Alta for a prompt 5AM start in the dark in order to summit and descend before the warmth and sunlight degraded the snow. Not exactly an "alpine start", but for a city outing it felt kinda harsh. The trail to Cardiff Pass was nearly snow free. When we finally reached snow and put on crampons it held our weight and was grippy. The snow was so good that after we traversed to the summit apron and reached the base of the east couloir, the group felt comfortable foregoing setting up a fixed line. We made solid steps in the snow and summited unroped. While on top, someone suggested descending the steeper west couloir. Conditions were perfect so we did, and the ropes and pickets we lugged to the top were put to use. Pickets were set as rope anchors and most of the group enjoyed a rappel. The snow remained firm and the return to Alta was like a walk in the park. It was an 8+ hour day of type 1 fun in the best snow climbing conditions the Wasatch Mountains offer. All agreed that the day went by fast, and I'm pretty sure nobody suffered. |
