tobacco root mountains day hikes with car camp - August 27, 2026
The Tobacco Root Mountains are located in the heart of the Beaverhead - Deerlodge National Forest in southwest Montana. In the range, there are 43 peaks over 10,000 feet. We will do a few of them. We will plan to stay at the Branham Lakes campground. From there many peaks are doable as day hikes. There are only 6 camp spots, first come first serve. If we don't get a spot here, there are many nice undeveloped sites down the canyon. Branham Lakes campground is about a 400 mile drive each way from SLC.
Most day hikes will include a string of peaks in a loop from camp and may include Leggat, Thompson, Branham, Bradley, Lady of the Lake and maybe a couple a little farther away like Long and Lonesome. Hikes will be in the MOD range with milage about 5 - 6 miles and elevation gain about 2000 - 3000 ft. Depending on which peaks we do, part of trip may be exploratory. Expect off-trail hiking and some scrambling.
Must register. Limit 6.
