fremont island, great salt lake, long day hike - October 24, 2026

Fremont Island is north of Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake and is seldom visited. The State of Utah owns Fremont Island and the Nature Conservancy holds a conservation easement on the island ensuring it will never be developed. One of the highlights of the Island is a cross chiseled in a rock outcrop by Kit Carson during the Captain John Fremont Expedition in 1843. We did this hike in February 2022 and Stanley Chang wrote a detailed trip report in the March 2022 Rambler for more info. The hike across mud flat from the Antelope Island causeway to the southern tip of Fremont Island should be totally dry. Castle Rock, the high point of the Island is 4995 feet and lake level will be about 4190 feet, so we will have about 800 feet elevation gain to the top. Count on a 23 mile hike from the Antelope Island marina to the high point and back. Email registration is required.
