hike across romania - March 21, 2027

I'm organizing a 7-day hiking trip in Romania. Our style of travel for this will be unique so read this carefully.

We will fly into Bucharest, take local transit to a quieter rural town, and from there travel entirely by foot from town to town with no planned route. Expect 10 - 20 miles of hiking per day mostly on rural roads or trails. We are "backpacking" in the sense that we will travel on foot with ultra-light packs, but we will not be camping or spending much time in the wilderness.

We will not be booking any lodging in advance. Generally we'll stroll into a village, ask around, and find a place to stay each night. There are many cheap accommodations and the people are known for their hospitality. The route will evolve daily. If you like structured itineraries, this is not going to be the trip for you.

We will be avoiding big cities and famous tourist spots. The goal is small, quiet villages and authentic local interaction. Expect to see scenery similar to this.

Food: We'll enjoy slow restaurant meals when available, but lunch will often consist of whatever you can stuff into your pack from a corner store (usually cookies and bananas for me). Again, you will need to be flexible.

Why Romania? It's a lesser visited part of Europe and flights aren't too expensive. I don't speak the language or really know anything about the country and that's part of the adventure. We are going to figure it out as we go.

Ultra-light packing: Your pack should be under 10 pounds. I can send you my packing list to show how I accomplish this. But it only includes absolute essentials. If you realize you need something, you can probably buy it there.

Estimated costs

Total expenses should be around $1,500 per person.

Note: I'm spending a second week with just my family and I would encourage you to plan something extra as Europe is a long way to travel for just one week.

The exact dates might change but it will be close to this week.

Want in? If this sounds exciting to you, let me know. Limit: 6 people.
