| The objective of this trip was to find the Crow's Eye Couloir, a scenic couloir through a rock band in Logan Canyon. The place is accessed from the Swan Peak winter trailhead. We'd climb the couloir and find some good ski descent from the summit above the couloir. Gretchen, Lincoln, and Hayden agreed to joint me for this exploration. We went loaded for bear, all the ski gear plus ice axes, crampons, and a rope. Finding the Crow's Eye turned out to be harder than we thought. I knew the entrance was "somewhat hidden," but I thought I had a GPS coordinate, and how hidden could a couloir entrance be? Very well hidden it turns out. We found the rock band easily enough, but then spent some hours on technical skinning and ugly postholing back and forth trying to find the spot. The GPS coordinate was clearly not correct. We think we spotted it late in the day, on the way out, but did not ski up to be sure. It is a task for another trip. We did summit the unnamed bump above the rock band and did find a really nice powder run through trees down the northern aspect into the valley below Swan Peak. The climb out was a bit tedious, but not bad, not nearly as bad as trying to work around the rock band on the way up. We tried skiing some of the western aspect below the rock band on the way out but the snow was very unpleasant. It is a very scenic area, the Crow's Eye is really scenic (in photos), and I'll probably try this one again. |
