| After I hung up my skis for the year, I got an email from Steven asking me if I was interested in taking my skis on the upcoming climb of Deseret Peak via the Twin Couloirs. Of course my answer was yes, so Steven, Thomas and I formed a splinter group of skiers who ascended the peak alongside Kurt's larger group who were on foot. I was hoping for some snow on the trail so that we could transition to skinning, but alas it was not to be. We carried our skis to the base of the couloirs and transitioned to crampons to ascend the snow. Steven was keen to try the East Couloir and kicked steps for the rest of us. I found this to be a harder climb than expected due to the extra weight of skis on my back. I was very glad to shed the weight at the top of the couloirs before going on to tag the summit. After a well-earned snack, we descended to meet Kurt's group on their way up to the summit. Back at the col, we clicked into our skis and had surprisingly good turns to the base of the West Couloir. Sadly, we soon reached the end of the snow and were back to carrying our skis through some fairly heinous undergrowth. The bush-whacking ended relatively quickly and we regained the trail to the campground. In hindsight, as a ski trip, this was a lot of effort for less than 1000' of skiing. I would love to repeat it earlier in the season when there is more snow cover. However, the climb itself is very worthwhile in any season. |
