uintas hike: castle peak/lake with dogs and dip - July 12, 2026

This hike begins on lower Mirror Lake highway at the Yellow Pine trailhead. The trails climbs steeply through wooded areas along Yellow Pine Creek with water along the route for dogs. This is generally a very uncrowded hike. The hike takes us to Castle Lake where brave participants can take a cold dip and dogs can fetch sticks (bring a swimsuit). From Castle Lake, we hike a touch further to the top of Castle Peak and then return the same route.

Start time will depend on weather forecast with earlier times to beat the afternoon heat. Post hike, we will drink and dine at The Notch in Samak with a dog friendly patio.

Meeting place will be at Kamas Food Town to carpool to the trailhead. Parking pass is required for the trailhead.
